Thai at Silk

Been meaning to eat here for the longest time, but was only able to have the chance to do so last week. As I had expected, service was good. In fact, I think they were overstaffed. They were very very prompt in refilling my water glass and offering me rice when I was running low. It was as if they had their eyes glued on us. Spooky. Haha. Anyways, here's what we tried:

Tom Yum Kai Php190

Our half consummed Tom Yum. Indeed the broth was good! Perfect sour/spicy/sweet combination. But what I liked even more was the generous serving of mushrooms! Hmmm. Perfect! This was described as chicken galangal in coconut creme soup. Good for 4 servings.

Mee Krawp Php330

My heart beats faster with the thought of this dish. I have been looking for this dish in all Thai restaus I eat in. I first tried this way back in 2002 in L.A. and have never forgotten the dish. Imagine my surprise and excitement when I found this in the menu!!!!! Excited!!!! Ecstatic!!! This is basically crispy fried noodles with a sweet/sour tamarind sauce and some shrimps. The tamarind sauce was sooo good. As we say in the vernacular, "nag-aagaw ang tamis at asim" (sauce was bordering sweet and sour at the same time) and so it was really addicting. The noodles were also perfectly fried. Good for 4 servings too.

Panang Pla Kapong Yang Bai Tong Php360

I could not resist. I took a bite before taking the picture. This is sole fish char-grilled in a banana leaf with perfumed panaeng curry. I didn't notice the fish that much, though  at the very least it tasted fresh but what caught my attention was the curry! I don't particularly like curry, but this version, I couldn't get enough of! I found myself scooping curry unto my rice (which was refillable Jasmine at Php60).

Will definitely come back for more of that Mee Krawp!

Funny thing I noticed, they translated the dishes ordered for the receipt. So the Tom Yum Kai became "Clear Chicken Soup", the Mee Krawp became "Crispy Fried Noodles"
and the Panang Pla Kapong Yang Bai Tang became "Sole Fish with Panaeng Curry." Makes sense
though I guess. :)

Blue Ginger

I wanted to try this place because of its kitschy ambience. It was a very vibrant mix of reds, yellows and oranges and since I needed some cheering up at that time, I decided to try this place out even thought it had opened only about a week prior to my visit..

The pork wasn't crispy yet the swamp cabbage. the ironies of life... this dish was more of a "binagoongan" kind of dish much to my surprise

Tom Yum Soup

There was a lot of chicken in the soup, not enough shrimp. there were no mushrooms at all! i'd have to say that i honestly felt like i was eating ready made (canned) soup here! not impressed at all!

Food was leaning towards crappy. I'm sorry but it's true. The serving and presentation of the food was like that just as well. Will not go back. Definitely.

Taste of Siam

This would really have to be my favourite Thai restau! There is nothing here that disappoints.

The soup is served with fire bursting out of the hole in the middle. Okay maybe im exaggerating..... I think they used dry ice to capture the effect but hey! i think it worked just fine! The soup was in a perfect level of sourness and was not too spicy. There were a lot of shrimps and big button mushrooms to go around for two people. The server said that the order was just enough for 2 people but i think 3-4 could have even enjoy this!

Fluffy Catfish Salad

I don't know why it's called "fluffy" because there was nothing fluffy about this dish! It was very crisp and light, made even more perfect by its green mango-vinegar dipping sauce.

Though I knew what I had ordered was already more than enough for two people, I had to indulge my guest and order something with carbos, who later regretted coercing me to order this because we were so stuffed! hehehe.....Well, I think there was too much egg in this phad thai and not enough peanutty taste in it. I don't think I'll be having this again anytime soon.

Must Try: Fluffy Catfish Salad

Oody's

Not impressed at all.

Phad Thai-The noodles were over-boiled. If I may be so brave, I think they were even the kind that have been boiled over and over ready for use for when an serving is ordered. The peanuts were coarsely chopped and mixed into the dish for hopes of a peanuty taste but alas to no avail. What made this worse was that there were mung sprouts (monggo sprouts/togue) in the dish as well as tofu that seemed to have been reheated since from forever!!!!!

Crispy Catfish and Mango Salad-Horror of horrors. I was used to the catfish salad in Siam Taste and so I was, as a matter of speaking, horrified when I saw that a catfish head and tail was served to me under piles and piled of pickled green mango. My immediate reaction was to give away my order! But after some digging done by my friend, we discovered that it was after all flaked and pieced. But again. Horror of horrors! The catfish was not crispy at all. It was swimming in the juices of the pickled mango. It was hard to chew and was very very soggy. A very unappealing thought and unpleasant experience.
